Comparison: Presidents Franklin Pierce and Barack Obama

President Franklin Pierce was in office 1853-1857

  • Pierce and Obama were both democrats.

  • Pierce was 48 when inaugurated; Obama was 47.

  • Pierce and Obama were both lawyers.

  • Pierce and Obama both served in the U. S. Senate; Pierce also served in the U. S. House of Representatives.

  • Pierce, like Obama, was considered handsome with an appealing personality.

  • Pierce had no credentials as a major political figure, having served as a party activist and a reliable supporter of his party’s positions.  His opponent was a lackluster candidate without clear political distinction.

  • Obama had no credentials as a major political figure, having served as a community organizer and a reliable supporter of the far left wing of the Democrat Party.  His opponent was a lackluster candidate without clear political distinction.

  • Pierce became a candidate largely due to his public appeal, even though he hadn’t fully explained his positions on significant issues such as slavery, of which he was a proponent. This position and his promotion of the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, that reopened the issue of slavery in the west, increased the divisiveness in the nation; civil war was the ultimate outcome.

  • Obama became a candidate largely due to his public appeal, even though he had not fully explained his positions on significant issues, such as his favoring a socialist agenda.  His positions and the passage of the unpopular national healthcare act in 2010 increased the divisiveness in the nation, leading finally to a catastrophic defeat for the Democrat Party in the 2010 elections.

  • Pierce lost the nomination for reelection in 1856 and was denied a second term.  He was largely responsible for the emergence of the Republican Party of today.  Among presidential scholars, he is generally considered to be among the worst presidents in American history.

  • Obama...well, this one hasn't played out yet, but we can hope...
